This nineteenth century oratory stands near the original monastery and is famous for its picturesque location. During the times of the Penal Laws in Ireland, Gougane Barra's remoteness meant that it became a popular place for the celebration of the Roman Catholic Mass. These “Penal Laws” were a code of laws passed by the Protestant Parliament of Ireland which regulated the status of Roman Catholics through most of the eighteenth century. Their purpose was to entice the colonized Irish into wholesale conversion to Protestantism. This Penal Code reduced the Catholic population to dire poverty, but it also had the effect of strengthening their will to survive, and strengthening their attachment to their religion.

A4 & A3 prints are flat packed in a strong hardback envelope or roll tube. A2 prints are roll tube packed.
Prints are unmounted and unframed. Any images shown in frames are for illustration only.
